Caloosa Dive Club -- Scuba Diving in Southwest Florida

Arcuni on Club Minutes

A small sample of what we all endure when Joe the Scribe entertains

These are the Caloosa dive club minutes for July 21st ought five.

The meeting began with forty-nine and a half members and guests in attendance. Brian introduced us to those guests with his usual flair and panache, and they were Mike and Rebecca Ellis who were here for their second visit. They were followed by Charlie and Margie Fisher who were likewise here for their second visit, they were in turn followed by Kim and Leon Veilleux and Tess Madeya all here for their first time. This was followed by the curious pomp and ceremony surrounding the welcoming of new members into the club. After submitting their application for membership Kim and Randy Didier were escorted from the proceedings, which allowed the assembled to talk openly about the applicants' long list of credentials. After our usual lengthy debate lasting a full fifteen seconds they were re-welcomed to the room as our newest members, along with their kids Randy and Brittany.

Our officers' report began with a story about a small amount of gas that grew up and became a great big gas bubble. It seems that this little fart that was conceived and born in the depths of the sea wanted to travel when he grew up. But all his friends just wanted to stay right where they were in the relative safety of their dive buddy. But this little fart ... lets call him Biff, felt the need to grow ... to expand his mind, to reach new heights ... so, with little ceremony and only a whisper, he broke free the bonds of captivity and made a dash for the light of day. His journey began slowly but with increasing urgency he rose faster and faster toward the ever brighter and brighter light, but as he rose he grew bigger and bigger until he began to feel invincible. He felt like the king of the world, a fart with no equal ... but alas just as he met the surface he instantly knew ... it was better to be a little fart out diving haen a big fart blowing in the wind.

Rich says the contest (spearfishing) goes well, and that at this time no change is good, but the other competitors are welcome to keep on trying.

The photo contest also continues with the rules and (regs) posted on the club web site, and as always...new members have 2 weeks to join either contest and can do both at once if so inclined.

Brian went on to speak for only a moment about a Friday night BBQ in Islamorada, and yes dear ... we will have more on that at a meeting after the meeting. The trip is now full but 8 spaces are still available for the August 20 & 21st trip. And finally the inter club dive lottery begins tomorrow the 22nd at 10 am for the Pompano Beach trip that has 26 spots available.

Rich had no comment ... on anything concerning programs.

As a special update to last weeks story about the newly erect-ed Spiegel Grove, Brian says it's not a fluke or a side effect and the ship is ready to receive divers once again, but be gentle it's been lying limp for a long time.

Bob Miller reminds us of the many trips to exotic lands with fascinating views replete with varied and unbridled adventure, if that just barely whets your appetite for diving and travel you'll want to be sure and visit our wonderful dive and travel tables located ... just west of here.

Nominations for new officers will begin the first meeting in August; those wishing to humbly serve for the greater good are asked to tell someone who will in turn then nominate you... when then, almost always guarantees ... that you WILL inherit the position you seek. Nominations will continue for the first few weeks of August culminating with an election followed by a ticker tape parade, speech making and gala parties for the victors.

Look for this years' awards banquet to be held at the beautiful Sanibel Harbor resort on November 5 with all the best dive clubs in town in attendance.

Dive reports - Kim reports that some recent diving with the folks at Tilden's in the Keys on a 65 ft. reef dive that was described as phenomenal with a heavy surge and forty foot visibility. Rich reported doing some fish and line fishing with a couple of guys that dove ... just west of here ... in about 80 feet with 6 foot vis and judging from the lack of report after that, it must not have been what they call a crappy dive. Ron reported some 70 foot vis while diving in forty foot waters ... west of here ... and bagging a seven pound grouper and some snapper and mackeral and promised more exciting details from Charlie next time we meet.
