Caloosa Dive Club -- Scuba Diving in Southwest Florida

Florida Keys - Key Largo - April 2005

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take you to
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo Montego, baby why don't we go
Ooh I wanna take you down to
Kokomo, we'll get there fast and then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go, way down in Kokomo.

Did I mention that on this day there were 9 women and 7 men?

When we arrive at the dock at Kelly's on the Bay in Key Largo, the boat captains and mates say "Oh, the Caloosa Dive Club ... the singing group, is here." There are worse things we could be known for. We like to think that the crew loves us for more than our singing and for our willingness to keep going when the wind and the seas are trying to send us running for cover.  Even with the wind threatening, we load up the gear, pull on the wetsuits and jump into the still chilly (74-75 degrees) waters of Key Largo.

Some of us are just a little more colorful than others.

Saturday afternoon started off the adventure with 2 dives at "The Elbow". Captain Jorge & mate Jason pushed us off the dive platform just over the "City of Washington" wreck. It a very popular dive for this area of the Keys and we were greeted with about 40' viz and lots of beautiful reef creatures to look at.

We moved a short distance between dives to "The Fingers", another nice spot with undercuts and sea fans.

Sunday morning looked like a bad day to go out on the water and it was hard to pull on those cold wetsuits and get enthused about diving but luckily we stuck it out.

Captain Darryl and mate Steve put us on Molasses Reef. The first spot was the Winch Hole  or maybe "The Hole in the Wall" with viz at 40-45 and seas under 2'. Molasses is one of the most beautiful reefs in the marine sanctuary. There are tiny caves and openings to explore and swim through and we were entertained by several huge Eagle Rays who seemed to enjoy cruising gracefully over our heads and off into the distance. Some of the group saw 2 or 3 in a group and we were told later that a recent group had seen a school of 15-20 on one dive.   Eagle Ray by Cherri

For the second dive, we moved a short distance to the "Spanish Anchor" and a close by area called "The Aquarium".

Again we were treated to the glide show of Eagle Rays and we were also eyed by some very large barracuda.
