| Florida Gulf Coast -
Edison Reef |
| |
| Edison Reef is often overlooked as a good dive site
and that's good for those of us who like to spend a
little time there. Edison is actually a big area
with piles of rubble from the old Edison Bridge that
once crossed the Caloosahatchee into Fort Myers.
Some sections are only a few feet high and others are
fairly large and include sections of the roadway
structure from the bridge. |
| |
| Since Edison is only 12-15 miles out from Sanibel,
it is often adversely affected by the flow of fresh
water from the river and the volume of heavy rain during
the rainy season but if you catch the tide just right,
it can be a fantastic dive. We have been fortunate
enough to see turtles gliding along the rubble,
seemingly unworried about the presence of divers and
there are hundreds of different fish hiding in the
nooks, crannies and swim through areas of the structure. |

| The photos shown here were taken by Gary Wood on a
late June dive at Edison Reef. |
