East Coast Florida - Deerfield Beach

June 12, 2005

Despite stormy weather at home, Deerfield Beach gave us a pretty nice day on the water. With seas around 3-5 feet, we headed to the wreck of the Sea Empress. Apparently this wreck is home to a big school of Rays but we only saw one - probably due to the visibility. It is a nice wreck to explore and there are lots of fish hiding in holes and eating everything in sight on the structure.

Water temperatures are warming up to a more comfortable 79-80 but the visibility was a disappointing 10-15 feet with lots of stuff floating in the water.  A few people cancelled at the last minute so we ended up with non club members on the boat.  One of them was someone spearfishing but we learned quickly that our Southwest Coast seems to be better for spearfishing since the unlucky hunter came up empty handed.

Our second dive was on a ledge called the Boca Fish Hole. Visibility was even worse than on the first dive but at least we were in the water and not home mowing the lawn! The current wasn't bad so we did a slow drift along the ledge and found the usual assortment of interesting sights.

In keeping with tradition, we found a local restaurant that served up excellent food and sea tales and headed back to Ft. Myers to hear about the rainy boat races.
