A group of 19 members and friends headed out on Jupiter Dive
Center's Republic VII on January 10, 2009 to find Lemon Sharks.
Unfortunately, the water was unseasonably warm and not ideal for
Lemon Sharks. They seem to like water temperatures close
to 70°. We experienced water temps of 73 - 75°.
Our first dive was Juno Ledge. I always enjoy this site
and today was no exception. Visibility was not the
80 - 100 feet reported by the morning boat, but still a very
nice 60 feet. Starting our cruise along the ledge, an old
grandfather Loggerhead Turtle swam with us for a short while
before deciding to leave the crowd for a little solitude.
Soon we saw a 5 - 6 ft Nurse Shark come from under the ledge and
scoot out across the sand. Later in the dive, we saw a 5 -
6 ft Caribbean Reef Shark on top of the ledge, about 40 feet off
shore from us, ghosting along up current.
The second dive was at Captain Kurl's Ledge and was very similar
to the first, but without the sharks. Most of our group
saw several turtles, I saw one small Hawksbill as I was
ascending toward my first safety stop.
While we didn't find the Lemons, we did see a couple of sharks
and had a great time. The only complaints I heard from
anyone were that the DM was too fast, leaving most people way
behind and that 1 flag for 20 people (our 19 and the DM) is way
too many people per flag. This dive would have been ideal
with about 5 flags.
