Even
though we have already had a couple of
Caloosa Dive Club dive trips, the April Keys
trip officially signals the opening of the
dive season. We had enough divers that
we moved up from the Cristal Clear Charters
42' Newton to the roomier 46' Newton and
were able to beg and plead and convince
Captain George and Divemaster Steve to
switch boats and take us out. Photo by

Several of the group headed down on
Friday morning and made a stop at Island
Ventures (Captains Ann & Darrel). Captain
Ann told us that she had reports of rough
weather but we were pleasantly surprised to
find calm seas.
We
left Key Largo in the afternoon and headed to the Tropic Vista hotel on
Tavernier and set up the regular Friday
evening feast. By noon on Saturday,
the wind had picked up to 15-20 and
Divemaster Steve reported that the seas were
"sporty". He wasn't kidding and we were
challenged but able to get in for a couple
of OK (not great, just OK) dives.

We packed a local restaurant, the Pilot
House, for a fabulous dinner and headed to
bed hoping for a miracle with clearing
weather. We had to get out so we could
celebrate Frank Panhuise's 100th dive!

We
dragged ourselves to the boat on Sunday
morning, prepared to bag it and head home
but Captain George said it had calmed down a
bit and he thought it would be OK. We were
happy to hear that and it was more than OK.
We had two more fabulous dives on two
fabulous reefs. Loads of fish, nurse sharks,
eagle rays and everything in between.
We did have a surface interval celebration
and had the pleasure of presenting a 100th
Dive signed flag to Frank Panhuise -
Congratulations Frank!!! Now on to the
second hundred. Photo by Kim Didier.
On our way back in we hit a very low
tide so it was men to the bow and women to
the cabin - it looked something like this!
