Finally - the long
awaited trip to Key Largo for the Heavy Metal Tour Wreck
Trek was accomplished on the weekend of October 9-10.
The weekend kicked off with a BBQ at sunset on Kelly's
dock to get us in the mood for an adventure. Early, but
not too early, Saturday morning the Aquanut crew,
Captain George & Divemaster Darryl, got things moving
- with a little musical accompaniment from Dive Master
Brian C.
The first destination, the wreck of the Duane. The flat
seas we were all hoping for weren't present and there
was a swift current challenging us but the dive made it
all worthwhile. The Duane is an awesome wreck to dive
and combined with fabulous visibility it was a huge
success. It was even more special for Michelle Plank who
celebrated dive number 100.
The Aquanut crew took us to a calm place to relax for
the 2 hour surface interval and then headed to the Eagle
for the second dive. |

| The Eagle is one of the best wrecks in the
area. It's been down long enough to attract a huge
variety of sea life and there is lots of interesting
coral growth covering many parts of the wreck.
Visibility was even better and there was no current to
contend with on the Eagle.
The Spiegel Grove was the 3rd and final dive on
Saturday and Captain George informed us that the current
was strong and cameras were going to be difficult in the
conditions. There was a fair current but not as much as
we found on the Duane. We had a unique opportunity to
drift dive the entire wreck - most divers don't get to
see the whole wreck on one dive so we feel very
privileged. |

We felt it
necessary to uphold the 3D's, diving, drinking & diving,
and SunDowners was able to handle our group for
cocktails, dinner and a special 100th dive presentation
organized by Guy, Lynnan & Brian for Michelle. Everyone
in the group signed a special dive flag and enjoyed a
creatively decorated cake. Congratulations Michelle!!! |
Captain George introduced us to a new dive master
who just happened to be Darryl's wife Ann. We just
can't say enough about the efforts of the crew to make
our trip successful. As planned, the first dive
was a repeat on the Spiegel Grove. Conditions were
excellent and the water was much calmer than it had been
the day before. Again, visibility was superb and we
concentrated on just one section of the wreck - plenty
to handle on a single dive. With 20 divers, the
safety stop can be a little congested but we're a
friendly group so no problem. |
| The final dive of the weekend was a relaxing dive on
Molasses Reef - rumored to be the best dive in the Key
Largo area. We won't even try to dispute that
fact. Visibility was excellent and it was a nice chance
to relax and unwind. Bob Barger did a nice
job of putting this trip together and as far as we know,
everyone had a great time. |
