| Deerfield Beach -
2004 |
| |
To everyone's
delight, the predicted bad weather and rough seas held
off long enough for a Caloosa Dive Club charter to
Deerfield Beach on the East Coast. This is a really nice
charter to have because it's only a short drive and when
we charter the boat, we own the boat for the trip. The
Lady Go Diver is a well-equipped dive boat and very
spacious, especially when there is only have a small
group of divers who are familiar with each other.
By 1:30 pm the boat was loaded and cruising on calm
seas to our first destination for the afternoon, Fink's
Grouper Hole followed by another nice ledge in the same
general area. |
The Deerfield
Beach area is loaded with good ledges and wrecks, many
of them very close in so it's only a short trip to the
dive sites. Drift diving is generally the way to
dive this area so dive buddies were given dive flags to
carry and were dropped in at intervals depending on
whether they wanted to spear fish, lobster or take
photos. An earlier group had reported 60 foot
visibility (which they had actually measured) but by
afternoon, the visibility was reduced to under half
that. The water temperature is still around 81 but at
this time of the year everyone seems to get cold quickly
and the sun didn't do much of a warming job during the
surface interval. |

The reef is very beautiful in
this area. The ledges are large and loaded with lots of
overhangs and holes where some lucky hunters were able
to grab a few lobster to bring home. Divers are likely
to see some of the same tropical species that are common
to the Keys area but they appear to be much larger here.
Schools of bright yellow Pork Fish and Angel Fish are
everywhere and it's been said that sharks are often seen
on this dive location although there weren't any reports
of any on this day. A resting turtle was spotted
by one group and there were also some green moray and
spotted eels seen. |
| |
This is
definitely a do-again trip and Captain Bob (yet another
Bob!) tells us that weekday trips run all year. A group
of 6 divers could end up with the entire boat to
themselves!
Antonio's Italian restaurant, in the same shopping
center as Dixie Divers, served up good food that warmed
everyone up for the trip back home. |
